About our Teacher: Sandra Wilkerson has been teaching with BAM for over 7 years. Along with teaching homeschool courses and adult classes, Sandra helped us start our lifetime arts program by beginning classes at the Springs and Gallatin County Nursing home. Sandra is awesome and has some new prompts for journaling, so even if you’ve taken her class before you are sure to learn something new!

About the Class:

Art Journaling is a creative and personal way to express yourself using words and visual art in a spiral book/journal. It includes writing, images and patterns using a variety of writing tools and other supplies. Techniques include drawing, painting, doodling, collage, sketching and more.

What is the point?
To discover or rediscover the joy of creating just for the sake of creating. It is a dedicated space to creatively play, explore, experiment and release stress.

Benefits?
Aids in expressing ideas, thoughts, feelings, memories and emotions while helping to build emotional resilience and self confidence. Other advantages include: improve mental health, helps achieve goals, inspires creativity, boosts memory, enhances critical thinking, and eases anxiety.

Enjoy the process
This type of journaling is about self expression and personal exploration. It’s meant to be a fun creative outlet. Its not about making master pieces. Smile, relax and enjoy the therapeutic benefits of art journaling.

Each page of your art journal is a little gift or token of self care that you are giving to yourself!

Types of Art Journaling for mental health well-being:

All of the following can be compiled together in one journal, what a great collection they will make!

Gratitude Journaling: This method involves writing down things you are thankful for. It’s a practice that helps shift your focus to the positive aspects of your life. Don’t forget to include the little things!
Visual Journaling: This type of journaling is to document your surroundings, feelings, thoughts and future plans through drawings, sketches and paintings instead of words.

Bullet Journaling: Journal entries of this type use words only. Lists and short entries tracking your To Do’s, moods, goals, daily planning and more.

Dream journaling: Quite simply, record your dreams. For this one a combination of words and sketches works well.

Photo collage Journaling: Take a little break from drawing. Collect pictures, words and quotes from magazines and books. Create a page that represents who you are, what you believe, where you want to go in life.

Reflective Journaling: This involves recording and analyzing personal experiences, thoughts and feelings as they relate to specific events in your life. Jot down your event and then your reactions, feelings and emotions.
